SILVER(I) SULFIDE Usage And Synthesis
Physical PropertiesGrayish-black orthogonal crystals or powder; density 7.23 g/cm3; Moh’s hardness 2.3; melts at 825°C; insoluble in water; soluble in nitric and sulfuric acids.
Occurrence and UsesSilver sulfide occurs in nature as mineral argentite. It is used in ceramics.
PreparationMineral argentite is mined from mineral deposits, crushed, ground, and washed for use. In the laboratory, silver sulfide is obtained by passing hydrogen sulfide gas through a solution of silver nitrate. The precipitate is washed with hot water.
Chemical PropertiesGrayish-black powder.Soluble in concentrated sulfuric and nitric acids; insoluble in water.
Physical propertiesPhysical Properties Grayish-black orthogonal crystals or powder; density 7.23 g/cm3; Moh’s hardness 2.3; melts at 825°C; insoluble in water; soluble in nitric and sulfuric acids.
UsesSilver sulfide is useful as a photosensitizer in photography, Intermediates, chemical research.
UsesSilver sulfide is a brownish back powder formed by the combination of an alkaline sulfide with silver. It is a very stable compound made when toning silver-based images in sulfides. It is soluble in sulfuric and nitric acids but insoluble in water and alcohol.
UsesInlaying in niello metalwork, ceramics.
