Benserazide hydrochloride Usage And Synthesis
DescriptionBenserazide is an inhibitor of aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC), an enzyme that has dopamine decarboxylase activity. It is also unable to cross the blood-brain barrier. As a result, benserazide blocks the conversion of L-DOPA to dopamine by AADC in the peripheral circulatory system. Benserazide is often combined with L-DOPA in patients with Parkinson’s disease.
Chemical PropertiesWhite Crystalline Solid
UsesUsed as antiparkinsonian. A peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor
UsesAntiparkinsonian;DOPA decarboxylase inhibitor
UsesInhibitor of L-aromatic amino acid decarboxylaseBenserazide hydrochloride is used as an antiparkinsonian. It is a peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor. It is used as an inhibitor for aromatic L-aminoacid decarboxylase. Further, it serves as an inhibitor of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and Tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) inhibitor.
DefinitionChEBI: A hydrochloride that is the monohydrochloride salt of benserazide. An aromatic-L-amino-acid decarboxylase inhibitor (DOPA decarboxylase inhibitor) that does not enter the central nervous system, it is used as an adjunct to levodopa in the treatment of park nsonism. By preventing the conversion of levodopa to dopamine in the periphery, it causes an increase in the amount of levodopa reaching the central nervous system and so reduces the required dose. Benserazide hydrochloride has no antiparkinson actions whe given alone.
General DescriptionBenserazide is a peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor.
Biochem/physiol ActionsInhibitor of L-aromatic amino acid decarboxylase.
