DI-N-PENTYL PHTHALATE-D4 Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Propertiesclear colorless viscous liquid
UsesDi-n-pentyl phthalate is a plasticizer for PVC membrane electrodes.
DefinitionChEBI: A phthalate ester that is the dipentyl ester of benzene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid.
General DescriptionClear colorless to light yellow liquid. Practically odorless. Floats on water.
Reactivity ProfileDI-N-AMYL PHTHALATE is an ester. Esters react with acids to liberate heat along with alcohols and acids. Strong oxidizing acids may cause a vigorous reaction that is sufficiently exothermic to ignite the reaction products. Heat is also generated by the interaction of esters with caustic solutions. Flammable hydrogen is generated by mixing esters with alkali metals and hydrides. Can generate electrostatic charges.
Health HazardInhalation of vapors from very hot material may cause headache, drowsiness, and convulsions. Hot vapors may irritate eyes.
Fire HazardDI-N-PENTYL PHTHALATE-D4 is combustible.
Chemical ReactivityReactivity with Water No reaction; Reactivity with Common Materials: May attack some forms of plastics; Stability During Transport: Stable; Neutralizing Agents for Acids and Caustics: Not pertinent; Polymerization: Not pertinent; Inhibitor of Polymerization: Not pertinent.
Safety ProfileExperimental reproductive effects. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.
Purification MethodsWash the ester with aqueous Na2CO3, then distilled water. Dry it with CaCl2 and distil it in a vaccum. Store it in a vacuum desiccator over P2O5. [Beilstein 9 IV 3178.]
