Methyl vinyl sulfone Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Propertieslight yellow liquid
UsesMethyl vinyl sulfone has been used:
  • as derivatization reagent in an improved method for detection of pseudouridine in nucleoside mixtures by capillary HPLC-mass spectrometry
  • in preparation of methylsulfonylethyl cellulose via Michael addition to cotton fabric
  • in Heck vinylation of aryl halides
General DescriptionClear pale yellow liquid.
Air & Water ReactionsWater soluble.
Reactivity ProfileMethyl vinyl sulfone is incompatible with oxidizing agents . Can react exothermically with reducing agents to release hydrogen gas or hydrogen sulfide. In the presence of various catalysts (such as acids) or initiatiators, can undergo exothermic polymerization reactions.
Fire HazardMethyl vinyl sulfone is probably combustible.
Purification MethodsPass the sulfone through a column of alumina, then de-gas, distil it in a vacuum line and store it at -190o until required. [Beilstein 1 III 1866.]
